Catholic Charities of Chemung/Schuyler is seeking community support for two upcoming giveaways to begin the new school year.
Through Aug. 22, numerous area businesses and Catholic Charities are collecting new backpacks and new school supplies. These items will be distributed at Back to School kickoff events set for Wednesday, Aug. 23, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Schuyler Outreach, 112 10th St., Watkins Glen; and Thursday, Aug. 31, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Ss. Peter and Paul gymnasium, 556 St. Joseph’s Blvd., Elmira. Free haircuts also will be offered at these events.

In other news involving Catholic Charities of Chemung/Schuyler, the agency raised nearly $40,000 from its sixth-annual gala held May 6 at Elmira Country Club and its fourth-annual soiree, which took place June 9 at Watkins Glen International. Additionally, Catholic Charities recently was awarded $5,000 from the Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation as well as $2,000 from the Fund for Women of the Southern Tier.
