Effect reform at local level

To the editor:

In the July column “Decent heath care a basic human right” Stephen Kent states, “As Catholics we believe that health care involves the fundamental issues of life and dignity.” He continues, “Shouldn’t health care be as much a part of national security as defense ‚Äì the government doing what the individual cannot do?” This statement is chilling.

Historically, Roman Catholics have used ethical approaches to the problems of society. Catholics have funded hospitals and universities. We did not look to the government to solve our problems.

In “The Wealth of Nations” 233 years ago, Adam Smith wrote, “I have never known much good done by those who affect to trade for the public good.”

Even as we fund the ever-increasing taxes of our state and of our country, as Catholics we must increase our tithes of time, talent, and money, working to improve the quality of life for all.

Let us protect life and dignity at a parish level where the needs are known. Let us build and staff clinics at a parish level and build and staff hospitals such that all parish and diocese health care needs are met.
