Although there won’t be the traditional gathering of runners to begin Thanksgiving Day, Elmira Notre Dame High School’s eighth-annual Turkey Day 5K is still a go.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 version of the popular road race will adopt a virtual format in order to ensure participants’ safety. Rather than being conducted at a specific time and place, the Turkey Day 5K will begin Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, and extend to Saturday, Nov. 28. Families and individuals are encouraged to incorporate their own 5K route into their Thanksgiving festivities over that three-day period.
In previous years, the 5K run has begun and ended at Notre Dame High School on Thanksgiving morning, with hundreds of men, women and children running through the streets of Elmira’s south side and prizes being awarded to the top finishers in several categories.
The Turkey Day 5K serves as a fundraising event for the high school through registration and sponsorship proceeds. To become involved in the 2020 virtual event, visit www.notredamehighschool.com.
