A special celebration has been planned in September for St. Casimir Church in Elmira.
St. Casimir is commemorating the 100th anniversary of its church building during the 10 a.m. Mass on Sunday, Sept. 16. A 15-minute prelude featuring Polish hymns will precede the Mass, and a reception will follow at the White Eagles Club. The church, located at 1000 Davis St. in northern Elmira, was dedicated Sept. 15, 1912, to serve a growing Polish Catholic immigrant population that had led to St. Casimir Parish being formed in 1890. St. Casimir became clustered with St. Charles Borromeo Parish in 1994, and in 2006 Our Lady of Lourdes joined the cluster as well. The three churches were incorporated into a single parish, Christ the Redeemer, in 2009.
