Elmira native becomes priest of Providence

Father Thomas J. Woodhouse, a native of St. Mary Parish in Elmira, was ordained June 1 as a priest of the Diocese of Providence, R.I.

Father Woodhouse, 56, was ordained by Providence Bishop Thomas J. Tobin at Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedral.

Though born in Elmira, Father Woodhouse grew up in New Canaan, Conn. According to the diocesan newspaper the Rhode Island Catholic, he graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University before joining the U.S. Marine Corps and serving for three years as an aviation supply officer. From there, he began employment with Raytheon Corp.’s Missile Systems Division as a chief pilot for flight test operations.

He entered formation for the priesthood in 2009 and attended Blessed John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Mass. He also attended the Institute for Priestly Formation at Creighton University in Nebraska. He was ordained a transitional deacon in 2012.
