Olivia Weeks, an Elmira Notre Dame High School junior, has brought home a state track-and-field championship.
Weeks earned the Division 2 title in the girls’ triple jump on June 13 by leaping 38 feet, 6 3/4 inches. That bested second-place finisher Lakeshia McCloud of Bath Haverling, who went 38-4. Weeks went on to finish fourth in the Federation competition (Divisions 1 and 2 combined) the next day. The state meet took place at the University of Buffalo.
Another strong finish at states came from McQuaid Jesuit’s Tomarris Bell, who settled for second place in the Federation in the boys’ pentathlon. The junior finished with 3,517 total points, behind only Ben Waruch of Rondout Valley with 3,613.
Other highlights from the state finals came from Aquinas’ B.J. Murray, who finished third in Division 1 and fourth overall in the boys’ 200-meter dash; Our Lady of Mercy’s Jamiee McClary, sixth in Division 1 and fifth overall in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles; and McClary, sixth in Division 1 in the girls’ 100 dash.
