Christian Lambert, a seventh-grader at Elmira’s Holy Family Junior High School, earned first place at the annual Catholic Middle School Spelling Bee held Feb. 4 at Rochester’s McQuaid Jesuit High School.
All Catholic schools in the Diocese of Rochester with enrollments in grades 7-8 were invited to participate, sending anywhere from one to five contestants depending on their enrollment numbers. Christian had qualified as an alternate, or third-place winner, at an Elmira-area spelling bee hosted by his school in December.
Also from Holy Family Junior High, Matthew Roy earned a fifth-place finish in the competition at McQuaid.
