Emphasize consequences

To the editor:

I have just read the article “USCCB focuses on abortion, missal” that appeared in the December 2008 Courier.

The untitled statement by the bishops said “the church should be intent on opposing evil.” I say where’s the beef? If we oppose evil, let’s not just hear a couple times a year from our pulpits that abortion is evil and let it go at that. Let’s hear what the consequences are. Let’s tell the folks in the pews that abortion is a mortal sin and if we participate in it in any way, such as not voting our faith, we are guilty of a grave sin.

I noted that when the statement was read to the bishops they greeted it with applause. I fail to see why.

I think we need some bishops that are willing to fall on the sword if they our intent on opposing evil like our patron saint, Bishop John Fisher.
