End cruel treatment

To the editor:

I was pleased to see Joel Freedman’s letter in the January issue, about the need for the church to do more to prevent cruelty to animals. I have written to the Vatican from time to time to protest the horrendous patron saints "festivals" in Spain, but I have yet to receive a response. I wish Bishop Clark would request Pope Benedict to address these issues.

The humanitarian Dr Albert Schweitzer wrote: "The time will come when public opinion will no longer tolerate amusements based on the mistreatment and killing of animals. The time will come, but when?"

In the 21st century, I often wonder when the cruelty will stop. The Pope and every archbishop, bishop, and priest should speak out about this issue. All Catholic schools should include humane education in their curricula. Such actions would certainly honor Saint Francis of Assisi, the Patron saint of animals.
