Essay contest promotes patriotism

The Rev. Paul J. Cuddy Assembly of the Knights of Columbus is hosting an essay contest on the topic of “As an American, what is a patriot to you?”

There will be one winner receiving a $100 U.S. savings bond in each of three divisions: 5th and 6th grades; 7th and 8th grades; 9th to 12th grades. All entries must be a maximum of 200 words and must be typed, double-spaced and have one-inch margins. Submit name, address, phone number, school and grade with the entry. If homeschooled, note that on the entry.

Entries must be postmarked by April 15 and mailed to Patriot’s Day Essay Contest, 6158 Patriot Dr., Ontario, NY 14519. All entries become the assembly’s property for the purpose of further publication. Winners will be notified by mail May 28.

Awards will be presented at 7 p.m. June 14 at the Webster Columbus Center, Barrett Drive, Webster, at a dinner to honor Father James P. Jaeger as the assembly’s patriot of the year. Father Jaeger is pastor of the Catholic Communities of St. Anne and St. Gregory in Palmyra and Marion. He also is a lieutenant colonel and head chaplain in the Niagara Falls Air National Guard and a chaplain at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center.
