Events held in memory of Fairport crash victims

In the years since five Fairport teens were killed in a car crash, they have been memorialized by many charitable ventures.

The community remembered Hannah Congdon, Bailey Goodman, Meredith McClure, Sara Monnat and Katie Shirley on June 26, which marked five years since the crash on that day in 2007.

St. John of Rochester in Fairport held a Mass in their memories at 6:30 a.m. and Fairport’s Church of Assumption held a Mass in their memories at 11:15 a.m. that day.

Additionally, community members are invited to donate blood in the girls’ memories through June 29 at the Perinton, Rochester, Greece or Henrietta Red Cross blood donation centers, or at a community blood drive from noon to 7 p.m. Friday, June 29, at St. John of Rochester, 8 Wickford Way, Fairport.

The girls also will be remembered at the annual Fairport Angel Walk at 6 p.m. Aug. 3 in Fairport. That event raises money for the Joey Fund, a fund established by students at Fairport High School to help families of Fairport students recently involved in a disaster, crisis, long-term illness, or other unusual situation that may stress their resources or ability to meet financial responsibilities.

Other charities that have been created in memory of the girls include Hannah’s Hope, a school in Kenya that was built through the charity Joining Hearts and Hands, and Katie Shirley’s Closet, which raises money for Daystar.
