Events mark congregation’s 160th year

The Sisters of Mercy will hold two special events this spring and fall as part of the celebration of the order’s 160th anniversary of ministry in the Diocese of Rochester.

Bishop Salvatore R. Matano will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, June 11, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Church in Rochester, according to information provided by the Sisters of Mercy. Then on Oct. 7, a “Day of Ministry with the Sisters of Mercy” will include prayer, information and testimonials about the Sisters of Mercy ministries. Participants also will have an opportunity to take part in those ministries.

The Sisters of Mercy first came to Rochester on June 9, 1857, to serve at St. Mary Church and soon established a school. The sisters founded Our Lady of Mercy School in Brighton and Notre Dame High School in Elmira. In recent years, the sisters also created Mercy Bridges, an adult literacy program. Other ministries founded by the Sisters of Mercy include Andrew Center, a foster-care ministry for infants and children; Mercy Spirituality Center; and St. Michael’s Woodshop, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

For more information about the anniversary events, contact Sister Sheila Stevenson at 585-269-8858.
