Expansion planned for Southport facility

St. Joseph’s Hospital, Elmira, began expansion of its Southport Primary Care Facility on Oct. 18 with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by officials from the hospital and the Town of Southport.

The facility is located at 859 Broadway. According to hospital officials, the project will cost approximately $400,000 and is expected to be completed in early 2005, weather permitting. Klugo Construction Inc. of Elmira is overseeing the work.

Sister of St. Joseph Marie Castagnaro, St. Joseph’s president and CEO, noted that the Southport practice, led by Dr. Robert Mauri, has grown by 15 percent in recent years, resulting in the need for more health-care practitioners and examination rooms.

The Southport building is one of three primary-care facilities operated by St. Joseph’s. The others are Big Flats Primary Care and Elmira Primary Care
