Catholic Charities of Livingston County’s program Faith in Action, which relies on volunteers to help aging residents with light housekeeping tasks, saved the Livingston County Department of Social Services money and helped elderly residents remain in their own homes.
That’s according to the nomination form written by the county DSS for an award from the State Office of Children and Family Services that recognizes agencies offering outstanding protective services to older adults.
New York recognized the Faith in Action program and 17 other individuals and organizations during the state’s Bureau of Adult Services 18th-annual Adult Abuse Training Institute Sept. 22 at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo Hotel and Conference Center.
Christa Barrows, program director of Faith in Action, said the agency was notified about the award in August. She said because Faith in Action uses volunteer labor, it is able to be cost-effective. The program does not charge a fee for service to its clients, and relies on community donations and grants from private foundations and the government to cover its minimal operating costs, she said.
Additional Faith in Action volunteers are needed. For details, call 585-658-4466, ext. 18.
