Faithful young athletes to be honored

About 80 young athletes will be honored this weekend during the Diocese of Rochester’s Faith Through Sports Awards recognition ceremony for the current sports season.

The ceremony will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 296 Flower City Park, with Bishop Matthew H. Clark presiding.

The diocese, the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis and CYO Athletics distribute the Faith Through Sports Awards for young people who have demonstrated faith on the soccer field, the basketball court and the softball field. Each parish in the diocese may nominate one boy and one girl from each CYO age group for each sports season.

“They might not play the best, but they are the best person on the floor,” Mary Greenblatt, administrative assistant with the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis, said of the award recipients.

Award nominees must demonstrate Catholic values and Christian behavior, the qualities of a team player, positive leadership for teammates, respect for the team, opponents and officials, and must work toward team and personal goals.

“They are just really good kids,” Greenblatt stated.

Faith Through Sports recognition for the soccer season took place in November 2007.
