Father Alphonsus A. Trabold, OFM, a professed Franciscan Friar for 58 years and a priest for 53 years, died April 5, 2005, at Olean General Hospital in Olean, N.Y. He was 79.
Born Roger Trabold, he attended St. Boniface School and Aquinas Institute in Rochester and St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y. He received the name Alphonsus upon his entrance into the novitiate in 1945. He professed first vows in 1946 and final vows in 1949. He was ordained a priest at the friary church of Mount St. Sepulchre in 1951.
Father Trabold was then a seminary instructor for one year following which he was assigned to pastoral ministry. In 1960 he moved to St. Bonaventure University where he taught theology and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He continued to work and reside at St. Bonaventure for 45 years.
He is survived by his sister, Ruth Moreland, and niece, Suzanne Cardella, both of Rochester, and his fellow Franciscans.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by the vicar provincial, Father Charles Miller, OFM, in St. Bonaventure University Chapel on April 9, 2005. Burial was in St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Allegany, N.Y.
