Father Andrew F. Giardino, OFM, 86

Franciscan Father Andrew F. Giardino, a native of Geneva, died July 30, 2016, in West Hartford, Conn. He was 86 years old.

After graduating from Geneva High School in 1946, Father Giardino entered St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., where he studied for six years. He was received into the Order of Friars Minor, Holy Name Province, on July 14, 1955, in Lafayette, N.J., and professed first vows there in 1956. He studied philosophy at St. Francis College in Rye Beach, N.H., and earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Bonaventure University in 1958. For the next four years, he studied theology at Holy Name College in Washington, D.C.

Father Giardino professed his final vows on Aug. 18, 1959, and was ordained to the priesthood in Washington, D.C., on March 17, 1962. During his more than 50 years of ministry, he served in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Connecticut and New York City. He served on the Provincial Council for 12 years and was a general visitor to Immaculate Conception Province in 2000.

He is survived by his sister, Marie Combs, and brother, Dominic Giardino, both of Geneva, and a brother, Anthony Giardino, of Seneca Falls.

Father Giardino’s funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 4, 2016, in Hartford, Conn., with burial in Glenwood Cemetery, Geneva.
