Father Armand A. Maurer, CSB, a native of Irondequoit, died March 22, 2008, in Toronto. He was 93.
Father Maurer grew up in Irondequoit’s St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. He graduated from Rochester’s Aquinas Institute in 1936 and taught English there from 1941-42. After graduating from the University of Toronto he entered the Basilian congregation in 1940 and was ordained on Aug. 15, 1945.
In 1949 he was appointed to the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto, where he spent the rest of his life engaged in research, publishing and teaching. In 1954 he received the Guggenheim Fellowship to pursue research in medieval philosophy. He studied in Oxford, Paris and Rome, and he published dozens of scholarly articles and books on medieval philosophy.
Father Maurer is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins and his fellow Basilians.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 16, 2008, in Toronto. A memorial Mass was held at Christ the King Church in Irondequoit on May 10, 2008. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Toronto.
