Father Bob

This weekend I went to the funeral of a dear friend and colleague, Father Robert Smith. Father Bob served as chaplain, and for a time as interim director, of the Catholic Community at Cornell University. He was a blessing in every way. His priesthood and Catholicism were as natural to him as breathing. And if ever there was a person whose life and faith "fit" his situation it was Father Bob. His life at Cornell was the perfect combination of a life of prayer and intellectual curiosity. There was nothing more appealing to Father Bob than time in conversation with others about big ideas, challenging concepts and questions of faith. He shared that with the whole community at Cornell, and in a special way as a member of a fraternity (!) who loved him and whom he loved with great joy. May God welcome home his faithful servant, and comfort us who miss him.
