Fidelis Care helps those in need during Thanksgiving

More than 8,000 needy families across New York state, including nearly 2,000 in western New York, had a hearty Thanksgiving meal this year thanks to Fidelis Care, which provided more than $120,000 in coupons for free turkeys and sponsored other charity drives and events.

Fidelis — the health plan of New York’s Catholic bishops that provides free or low-cost insurance coverage — distributed the coupons with help from doctors and health centers in its provider network. Locally Fidelis Care provided turkey coupons to Anthony Jordan Health Center in Rochester and also worked with community service organizations such as Catholic Charities, the United Way, Salvation Army and local food pantries to distribute coupons.

Also in Rochester, Fidelis Care supported Wilson Foundation Academy’s Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway to benefit needy students and their families. Fidelis also collected food to donate to the baskets.

On Dec. 3 Fidelis Care supplied some holiday cheer for children and their families served by Compeer Rochester Inc. by sponsoring the organization’s youth holiday party. Compeer serves more than 700 children and adults in Monroe County who are striving for mental wellness and in need of an emotionally supportive relationship.
