Filipino community’s Santacruzan celebration to honor Mary

Filipino Catholics in the Diocese of Rochester will honor Mary during the community’s annual Santacruzan celebration May 18 at St. Patrick Church, located at 115 Maple Ave. in Victor.

Santacruzan is a traditional Filipino celebration, but this year, the local Vietnamese and Burmese Catholic communities are expected to participate as well, according to Shirley Cirillo, one of the event’s organizers. The event is open to the public as well.

The event will begin at 3 p.m. with a procession, followed by the crowning of a statue of Mary and the offering of flowers to the Blessed Mother, Cirillo said. Many of the teens and adults participating in the procession will be clad in costumes representing Mary’s various titles, and younger participants will be dressed as angels, she said, noting that the rosary will be prayed during the procession.

Father Edison Tayag, pastor at St. Patrick, will concelebrate Mass at 4:30 p.m. with Father Martin Truong, CRM, who is parochial vicar at Parish of the Holy Family in Gates. Those who would like to stay for a potluck dinner and program after the Mass are encouraged to bring a dish to share.
