To the editor:
As a lifelong Catholic who tries to be a thinking Catholic, I find the Church’s stand on AIDS prevention and “artificial” contraception, as presented in your July 2005 lead story “AIDS and Catholic morality,” demoralizing and embarrassing.
Certainly abstinence and monogamy are the most effective ways to avoid HIV/AIDS. However, the realities of human behavior often do not follow the Church’s rigid prescriptions. Like it or not, people do not abstain and are not monogamous, especially before marriage.Promoting abstinence should not preclude also promoting safe sex.
