Nov. 18 officially starts my holiday season because it just so happens to be my birthday. This year I was blessed, once again, with the company of family and friends and many generous gifts. I am lucky to have this annual reminder one week before Thanksgiving to really put all the things I am thankful for into perspective. I know not everyone is as fortunate as I am.
On Thursday, I will once again be surrounded by loved ones and share a plentiful, delicious meal with them. For me it truly is the most enjoyable time of year. So, this Thanksgiving, I am going to give thanks for all the things I have been blessed to receive and also for the opportunity to be able to give back. The Christmas season is about giving, after all.
The Catholic Courier/Catholic Charities Christmas Appeal — which kicks off right after Thanksgiving — is a great way to help our neighbors in need. More people than ever, right in our own neighborhoods, are in need of basic things that we may all take for granted. People who may not have family, friends, their health or even food — let alone the joy of birthday or Christmas gifts — need our help. What better way to give thanks and start the Christmas season off right than to donate toward the effort to help the less fortunate?
I am thankful for being one year older. I am thankful for all the blessings in my life. I am thankful for the opportunity to help others through the Christmas Appeal. What are you thankful for?
