God present in darkness

To the editor:

Where was God in a dark world gone mad over 2000 years ago? A world in which innocent children were being ruthlessly sought out and brutally murdered by a violent, egocentric ruler whose power was threatened by a mere infant or toddler boy? Did God condemn that godless world? He did not. God so loved that world that He entered into it a defenseless, newborn infant, born into the very kingdom looking to kill him before he even arrived.

He was not found 2000 years ago in any kind of earthly power, though that is where people looked for Him then and we still look today. Instead, He found a home in the hearts of a young, yet unwed teenage Mary, who was willing to give her body to birth him into the world, and her bewildered fiancé, Joseph, who was open to God leading him places he didn’t understand. He was born in a barn in the shadow of one of the mighty kingdoms of the world and his first visitors were those people most despised by the righteous.

Where is God in the darkness of these recent days? You will find Him everywhere people are working to nurture and protect human life in all of its vulnerable states. The infant Jesus continues to seek refuge in each human heart that is open to learning to love as He does. Open our hearts. Come, Lord Jesus.
