Gorbachev to visit Fisher

Mikhail Gorbachev, former president of the Soviet Union, will visit St. John Fisher College in Pittsford on Thursday, Oct. 7.

Gorbachev will meet with students in the afternoon and give a presentation in the Student Life Center at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. However, tickets are required for admission, and may be procured by calling 585/385-8396.

As Soviet president, Gorbachev engineered “perestroika,” or the restructuring of Soviet government, and “glasnost,” or political openness. He is credited with ending communist rule in Eastern Europe, and was the recipient of the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize.

In 1992, Gorbachev became president of the Gorbachev Foundation, a not-for-profit, nonpartisan political foundation. Its purpose is to articulate and address the challenges of the post-Cold-War world.

For information about his visit, call 585/385-8070.

Gorbachev’s visit to Fisher is the fourth in a series of annual “Head of State” presentations at the college. Previous guests were Lech Walesa of Poland; Mary Robinson of Ireland; and Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan.
