Ground broken for new Providence Housing project

On Dec. 15, ground was broken for Providence Housing Development Corp.’s latest affordable-housing project, Atwood Park Apartments, which is for very low-income seniors ages 62 and older.

The apartments are being built at 4 Atwood Drive, Gates. The project was made possible with $3.8 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program, a HUD Developmental Planning Grant of $262,743 and $400,000 from the Monroe County Home Investment Partnerships Program.

The project will feature 33 one-bedroom apartments in a two-story building with an elevator. All of the units will be fully handicapped accessible or adaptable, and one unit will be suited for the visually or hearing impaired. All apartments will have fully equipped kitchens, individually controlled heat, wall-to-wall carpeting, cable TV access, and a balcony or patio. A community room, laundry room and storage space will be available to all residents.

Atwood Park Apartments is for senior citizens whose income is less than 50 percent of the area median income, which currently is $23,300 for one person. Rents will be based on 30 percent of each applicant’s income and will include heat and hot water.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Those wishing to be placed on the interest list for a unit at Atwood Park Apartments should call Providence Housing at 585-328-3228, ext. 1417. Applications will be available in late spring of 2010 for the anticipated fall 2010 opening.
