Happy St. Patrick's Day! - Catholic Courier

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

With a name like mine it’s pretty obvious that I’m wearing green today! I can’t claim to be 100 percent Irish, but a significant portion of both sides of my family came from the Emerald Isle.

One of the best gifts I’ve ever received came from my parents a few Christmases ago; it was a genealogy of our family that stretches back hundreds of years. They had spent the year compiling it, including information gleaned from trips to Ireland made by family and friends. I love the sense of history and "connectedness" it conveys for my family, the sense that we are a part of something bigger than just this one moment in time. This also is what attracts me to St. Patrick’s Day. The saints are my faith family, and I feel the same connectedness that transcends time through them. Each saint offers me a slightly different view of what it means to follow Christ.

St. Patrick’s Day combines my biological family with my faith family — which is why it’s particularly special. Everyone can find this kind of combination, though. Whether it’s a saint that is associated with our nationality, our particular gifts and skills, or even our particular struggles in life, each has the potential to draw together our faith and our day to day lives. I hope that everyone reading this enjoys the day, maybe eats a little corned beef, and will be inspired to find other feasts that bring together members of our "faith family" of saints and the everyday experiences of life.
