Hockey game marks end of reading challenge

The Diocese of Rochester is hoping the stands at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester will look like a sea of blue when the Rochester Americans hockey team takes on the Lake Erie Monsters on Dec. 20, which will be Catholic School Night at the arena.

The diocesan Department of Catholic Schools, which is sponsoring the event, is selling blue T-shirts emblazoned with a picture of the Amerk’s mascot, The Moose, along with the words, "Score for a lifetime with a Catholic School Education!" A ticket to the game and a T-shirt may be purchased for $10.

The event will celebrate the end of the diocesan schools’ Fall Reading Challenge, which ran from Nov. 4 through Dec. 6. Students in all grade levels were encouraged to participate by recording the books they read in class, for homework or for pleasure, during the challenge. The school with the most books read per student will be declared the winner, and students from that school will participate in a reading celebration with the Amerk’s Moose, hockey legend Jody Gage and other special guests during the week of Dec. 16-20.
