How to reduce financial fraud

Parishioners can take steps to help parishes reduce the likelihood of financial fraud, according to Father Daniel Condon, diocesan chancellor, and Lisa Passero, diocesan chief financial officer. These include:

* Using offertory envelopes, checks or electronic deposits rather than putting loose cash in collection plates, as loose cash is not easily traceable.

* Reviewing annual parish contributions statements for accuracy.

* Reviewing a parish’s budget or financial report.

* Volunteering to serve on a parish’s finance council.

* Reporting discrepancies to the diocesan financial fraud hotline.
