An informational session on the diocesan permanent diaconate program is scheduled to take place Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. It will be held at the Ss. Peter and Paul Parish Center, corner of Market and High Streets, Elmira.
The session, to be hosted by Deacon George Welch and his wife, Paula, will center on the formation process and ministerial opportunities within the permanent diaconate. All men single or married between the ages of 31 and 57 are invited, as well as their wives and family members.
The permanent diaconate was restored as an ordained ministry after the Second Vatican Council. It was established in the United States in 1968; the first class of permanent deacons in the Rochester Diocese was ordained in 1982. More than 100 deacons serve this diocese in a number of ministries.
