Italian organization to honor Bishop Matano

Bishop Salvatore R. Matano will be the honoree at the Cultural Italian American Organization’s upcoming recognition dinner.

The dinner is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Springside Inn on West Lake Road in Auburn. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails, and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $40 each and are available at Tesoro’s Apparel on West Genesee Street, Paul’s Barber Shop on Owasco Road and Sam’s Shoe Service on East Genesee Street in Auburn. People also may purchase tickets by calling Frank and Lynn DeOrio at 315-253-5095. Tickets will not be sold at the door. The deadline to purchase tickets is Wednesday, Oct. 7. Organizers are expecting a large turnout and are encouraging people to purchase their tickets early. A portion of the proceeds will be given to a charitable organization to be chosen by Bishop Matano.

Bishop Matano is the first Italian-American bishop of the Diocese of Rochester. His parents emigrated from Italy.

"We are proud to have the first Italian-American bishop in Rochester, " said Paolo Saltarello, cochair of the Cultural Italian American Organization, "We respect his services, both past and present, to the Catholic Church."
