Ithaca area man met the pope long before he was the pope

Frank Payton, an Ithaca resident, had the opportunity to meet Pope Francis in Buenos Aires in the late 1990s, while the future pope was serving as auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires. At the time, Payton was serving as supervising officer of all Salvation Army operations in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. He is now a retired officer of the Salvation Army with the rank of colonel. This photo was taken at the Salvation Army headquarters in Buenos Aires. Then-Father Jorge Mario Bergoglio is pictured third from the left along with Colonel Payton, far left; and fellow Salvation Army officials Major Carlos Bembhy, second from left; and Lt. Colonel Ernest Hofer, far right.
