Jesuit priest celebrates 55th jubilee

Jesuit Father James J. Fischer is celebrating his 55th anniversary of ordination this year.

Father Fischer grew up in Jersey City, N.J., and entered the Society of Jesus in 1942. He was ordained June 18, 1955, by Cardinal Francis Spellman at Fordham University.

He taught mathematics at St. Peter’s College in Jersey City (1949-51); Latin and English at Canisius High School in Buffalo (1952); and mathematics at the Fordham College of Philosophy and Letters, Shrub Oak, N.Y. (1957-65).

After that, he served as rector of St. Andrew-On-Hudson in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (1965-67) and rector/president of St. Peter’s Prep, Jersey City, N.J. (1967 and 1973-69).

He was provincial of the Social-Pastoral Apostolates of the New York Jesuit Province (1968-73) and was associate director of Fordham University Campus Ministry, New York (1979-80).

He was president of Regis High School in New York (1980-92) and McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester (1992-2003). He has been chancellor of McQuaid since 2003.

He was president of the American Association of Jesuit Scientists in 1966, and was inducted into the Catholic Educators Foundation’s Hall of Fame in 2007.

Father Fischer said 50 years of his life have been involved in the education of youths, which he has thoroughly enjoyed.
