Jesus helps us to forgive

To the editor:

I was very happy to see that “Forgiveness” was the major story in the September Catholic Courier. Of all the passages from Scripture, perhaps the most arresting and radical story is found in John 8:3-11 concerning the woman who was caught in adultery. Jesus gave an example of how to forgive by not condemning. That is the radical teaching. Forgive and do not condemn the person.

And this forgiveness is unconditional. He did not say, “I won’t condemn you IF you sin no more.” He emphatically said, “I do not condemn you.” Then He gave his advice, “Go and sin no more.”

There it is, the most radical forgiveness is that which does not condemn and has no condition attached. My faith increases every time I read and hear this story. Jesus is the Master and Teacher and has set the example for each of us.

And if this forgiveness results in reconciliation, then we have a foretaste of Eternal Life.
