Knitting ministry hosts day of sharing

Strands of Love Knitting Ministry hosted a Day of Sharing at St. Joseph Church in Penfield on Oct. 2. It was a great success! There were 55 participants from 16 different churches. Displays were set up for the different ministries to show off their works. Each church shared how long they’ve been working together, what they work on and who the recipients are for their handcrafted items.

Father Bob Kreckel started us off with a wonderful prayer. Cathy Kamp, pastoral associate for St. Joseph, came in and gave a presentation regarding the spirituality of the giving and receiving of shawls as well as the spirituality of the gathering of people in the community who share their ideas and creativity. The different groups make prayer shawls, lap blankets, hats, mittens, scarves and other handcrafted items. They are donated to individuals in need and various charitable organizations.

The Strands of Love Knitting Ministry has two groups, one that meets in the morning and one that meets in the evening. Both groups worked very hard to make the day a success. Everyone pitched in to put up the tables and chairs in the gym. Tisa Lach and JoAnn McBride provided beautiful baskets full of colorful yarns for centerpieces. The lunches, provided by Catering Works, were excellent and they were served up in the capable hands of Deb DeRise and Terri Cappozzi. Everyone helped to take down the tables and chairs at the end of the day.

The Strands of Love Knitting Ministry was started at St. Joseph in 2001 by Judy Roth. The ladies would meet on the first Monday of the month. They share their works and their stories of creating and giving. Since then an evening group has joined them. The groups meet on the first Monday of each month, at 10 a.m. and at 7 p.m. in the lounge at the Parish Resource Center. No knitting or crocheting experience is required to join!
