To the editor:
As a devout Catholic of 72 years, I am dismayed to see so many Church leaders replacing solid Catholic teaching with weak, man-made political arguments. The leaders who “Welcome the Paris Climate Agreement” show the extent to which political ideologies have penetrated churchmen’s thinking today. Catholicism teaches that all social justice must flow from the knowledge and love of God, not from a political agenda.
While U.S. air and water qualities already exceed the requirements of the Paris Accord, the agreement would saddle our citizens with the cost of pushing super-polluters like China to clean levels over a period of many years — something China can well afford on its own.
And, much of the climate agenda comes from poor science. J. Scott Armstrong reliably reports that only 2 percent of today’s “scientific studies” employ the scientific method, the critical tool to ensure accuracy and validity: 98 percent of climate science is unreliable. Why? Because these studies are funded by government grants according to how well their conclusions agree with what the government desires. And the Paris accord was based on studies funded by the left-leaning U.S. administration of 2009-17.
Great Church leaders like John Paul II, Benedict XVI, Cardinal Robert Sarah, Cardinal Gerhardt Mueller have voiced concern that so much of the Church’s thinking has been captured by the political ideologies of the globalist and the Left. Let us heed their warnings and return whole-heartedly to Christ!
