I am delighted to have this opportunity to comment on the extraordinary leadership my cherished friend Bishop Matthew Clark has offered the Rochester Diocese for the past 33 years.
Bishop Clark has been a gentle, humble, compassionate shepherd for the Diocese who has exercised his episcopal responsibilities with vision, courage, integrity, pastoral sensitivity and collegiality. In a special way he has promoted the Second Vatican Council’s emphasis on the Church as the People of God and its exhortation to the laity to exercise their baptismal call to holiness and ministry.
Bishop Clark truly loves the people of Rochester and bequeaths his successor a diocese that is sound spiritually, pastorally, ecumenically and fiscally.
With every best wish that Bishop Clark’s retirement will be filled with health, happiness and continued fruitful pastoral ministry, I am
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Howard J. Hubbard
Bishop of Albany
