To the editor:
Mr. Kepler’s ending quote: “May our Muslim brothers restore the fear of God in us” (Catholic Courier,April edition: “Sees attacks as prophetic”) fails to recognize violence placed on the world resulting from imposition of Islamic codes.
For example: Iraqi women are executed for not conforming to Islamic law. Honor killings are acceptable. Taliban militants destroy girls’ schools. Daily reports tortured bodies found in Iraqi streets; men, women and children bodies found of other sects, of any persuasion. In reality it isn’t the fear of God being instituted, but fears of self appointed human enforcers of their version of God’s laws.
(Mr. Kepler) assumes non-Islamic religions accept the sins he listed. Nothing could be further from the truth! Reference to our “radical courts” fail to realize rights were court dictated, because legislators refused to act!
One wonders how free world women would accept degradation under Islamic law. Clothing styles would change, schooling would be denied. They would be subject to a male dominated society under mullahs’ interpretation, not under our system of laws.
Catholics should pray to for intercession of the Blessed Virgin, to implore her son for deliverance. Christianity is based upon a loving relationship with our benevolent God, not fear. Muslim tenets of restoring fear of God imposes dictatorial tenets upon people. Religious leaders of all faiths should realize their beliefs are under violent attack. They should promote nonviolence. May God, the Lord and the Blessed Virgin protect us!
