Emma Butcher of Gates, a member of Holy Ghost Church, celebrated her 100th birthday May 12. She was recognized at the 8:30 a.m. Mass May 13 and received a proclamation from the Gates Town Board May 7. Relatives from Michigan, Illinois, California and Florida came in for her birthday party on May 13, which also was Mother’s Day.
Butcher, who has attended Holy Ghost Church for 18 years, has two children, eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
For 57 years — from 1932-1989 — she was married to Edward Butcher. She worked outside the home for 20 years, retiring from Taylor Instruments.
She is active with the Gates seniors program and plays cards every Wednesday. Her other hobbies are bowling, needlework, gardening, reading and gliding on her porch glider. She also shovels snow in the winter and has been taking computer classes.
Butcher also recently went to Walt Disney World with her daughter and grandchildren.
