Lung cancer race moves venues

A race to benefit lung cancer research that had been held at Holy Trinity Church in Webster last year has moved to Victor High School in anticipation of a larger turnout. The Second Annual Meaghan’s Race/Walk will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at the high school, 953 High St., Victor.

Last April, Meaghan’s Race/Walk drew more than 800 people and raised more than $60,000. It was named after Meaghan Latone, a young woman who had contracted nonsmoking lung cancer. Latone died Aug. 16, 2008, so this year’s race will be a memorial to her, said Gail Wagner, the race director.

Proceeds from this year’s walk will benefit lung cancer research at the Lipson Cancer Center at Rochester General Hospital and the Wilmot Cancer Center at Strong Memorial Hospital. Wagner said she is expecting more than 2,000 participants in this year’s race, in part, she said, because the race fills a void for those affected by lung cancer.

"So many people came up to us last year and said, ‘I lost my mom to this,’" Wagner said.

The registration fee for the event is $15, or $20 after March 30. If participants raise $40 in sponsorships, their registration fee will be waived. Race details are available at www.meaghans5k.com or by calling 585-872-5129.
