Making room for God

The question of what I value has been on my mind recently.

I am drafting a list of my priorities, and I have come to see that I have two lists: what I think should be my priorities (faith, family, work, service, fun among them) and what I actually give priority to in my life.

I know that God should top my priorities. Yet, when I look at my life as a sum of hours, there are too few spent in prayer, too few dedicated to spiritual growth. Yes, I work in a religious profession, so some days I can check both the faith and work boxes, but some days I must remind myself that paragraph pushing can be a spiritual experience.

This Lent, I was able to live my faith in simple ways through my daily routine: what I eat on Fridays, what I have on my forehead on Ash Wednesday.

Yet Easter brings a new challenge for me: How do I witness to the risen Christ the rest of the year?

To answer this question, I’ve found myself having to be intentional about prayer and spiritual growth. I pray for friends who through social media share their struggles. I care for creation by pulling weeds in my yard. I add prayer to family dinners and nighttime routines. I am seeking books and music that have meaningful messages.

Adding all of these things to my routine has been great, but I’m finding that I also need to filter out certain things that compete for my attention (I’m looking at you, phone). Sometimes I need to ask for help from others. Sometimes I need to say no.

What works for you? Have you subtracted anything from your life to make room for God?
