Many eclipse events are available in Rochester Diocese

A number of organizations in the Diocese of Rochester have made the Catholic Courier aware of special events planned for the total solar eclipse taking place April 8.

  • The Sisters of St. Joseph are sponsoring a gathering on the motherhouse grounds, 150 French Road, Pittsford. It will last from 1 to 5 p.m. April 8 and include music, protective eyeware, a telescope fitted with a solar-viewing filter and “awe walks.”
  • St. Monica Church, 831 Genesee St., Rochester, is planning an eclipse block party in its parking lot April 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. Entertainment will be provided.
  • St. Marianne Cope Parish, 2061 E. Henrietta Road, Henrietta, will present a tailgate party April 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. Food and beverages will be available.
  • St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry, 120 French Road, Pittsford, will host a program April 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. featuring adoration, lunch and a walk to the nearby Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse for music.
  • Notre Dame Retreat House, 5151 Foster Road, Canandaigua, will conduct an April 5-6 eclipse-themed retreat, “The Heavens Declare the Glory of God,” led by Michelle Francl-Donnay, an adjunct scholar of the Vatican Observatory.
  • House of Mercy, 285 Ormond Street, Rochester, will have a block party April 8 from 1-5 p.m. People can stop by for a bagged lunch & a free pair of solar eclipse glasses.
  • Eclipse-related events also are being provided by the Rochester Museum and Science Center, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Rochester Red Wings baseball club.
