Many shared in dinner’s success

To the editor:

Many people helped to make Newark’s Community Shared Christmas Dinner a joy-filled day.We served over 175 meals. Special thanks for support from Wegmans, Palmers, P&C and the Newark Florist. Thanks to our youths — and the adults who worked with them — who wrapped gifts, set up tables and chairs, and set the tables. Special thanks also to Jim Hurley, Betty Finewood, Karen Vanderbrook and Terry Urban who filled 60 take-out boxes for shut-ins. Thanks to the firemen who delivered these meals.

For the last two days we had 67 volunteers. Our eldest was 89. Each person had a special reason to be there. Some volunteered because they were away from their children. One had lost his wife a few weeks before. A group from Sodus got us all to sing with the piano player Randy Bouwens.

One family of four that wanted their young children to experience a real Christmas by helping others. They were very joyful in everything they did, helping prepare the dinner, working in the dining room, visiting those who came and cleaning up. The son, Joey, enjoyed rinsing dishes for the dishwasher. The mother visited with an elderly lady who lacked transportation and said she felt bad that no one would be paying a Christmas visit to her brother in a nursing home out of town. The family offered to take her to see him but she was too tired, so the mother took her home. When she returned, the family brought a few gifts that were left over to visit this stranger in the nursing home. Then we gathered the small children’s gifts that were left over and took them to the hospital for hospitalized children.

One could feel the Holy Spirit fill the room all day. I am sure many other stories could be told. It was truly a joy-filled Christmas.
