A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place May 14 to honor of the opening of McNiff Commons at 401 Powell St., Elmira.
McNiff Commons is made up of 11 one-bedroom units of affordable housing, aimed at people in the Chemung County area who have been diagnosed with a mental illness. Applications may be made through agency referrals.
Providence Housing Development Corp., an affiliate of the Diocese of Rochester, serves as developer and manager of McNiff Commons. This is Providence Housing’s third project in Chemung County and 23rd overall in the diocese, meeting the needs of affordable housing for families, seniors and those with special needs.
McNiff Commons is named in memory of Sister René McNiff, RSM, who served as CEO of St. James Mercy Health in Hornell from 1966 to 1999 and was board president of diocesan Catholic Charities from 1992 to 1995.Tags: Catholic Charities
