McQuaid Jesuit football falls in state quarterfinal play

McQuaid Jesuit’s memorable 2021 high-school football season has come to an end in the state Class AA quarterfinals.

McQuaid suffered a 26-14 loss to Buffalo Bennett of Section 6 Nov. 23. The contest had originally been scheduled for Nov. 20, but was postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak on the McQuaid team earlier in the week.

In their rescheduled contest, the Knights were plagued by turnovers throughout the evening as they saw Bennett steadily pull away. The Tigers went up 20-0 at halftime and eventually increased their lead to 26-0. It wasn’t until the closing minutes that McQuaid finally got on the board when quarterback John Mahar threw touchdown passes to Anthony DiMarco, on a 15-yard play and Parris Smiley on a 30-yard connection.

McQuaid’s final record was 9-2 as the Knights won their third consecutive Section 5 Class AA title this fall. They did so by defeating Aquinas Institute, 28-14, in the sectional final played Nov. 13.
