McQuaid picks principal as its president

McQuaid Jesuit’s principal will become its 11th president on July 1, the school announced March 2.

William A. Hobbs, 44, who has been serving as principal since July 2005, will replace James E. Whelehan, who is retiring at the end of the school year, John W. Crowe, chairman of the school’s board of trustees, said in a statement.

Hobbs has an extensive background in Jesuit education, Crow said. Prior to joining McQuaid, he was middle-school head at the Regis School of the Sacred Heart in Houston. He also has worked at schools in Towson, Md., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City.

He also previously served as assistant director of undergraduate admissions at St. Joseph’s University and spent seven years as a Jesuit.

Crowe applauded Hobbs’ work as principal, which included recently helping the school develop a new strategic plan.
