McQuaid students participate in march

For the first time ever, Rochester’s McQuaid Jesuit High School has taken a group to the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., according to Jann Armantrout, diocesan life-issues coordinator.

McQuaid sent a group of 15 students to the 34th-annual event to protest the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.

Although individual students from various schools have previously attended the event with churches and other groups, the march conflicts with state Regents exam schedules, Armantrout said. However, McQuaid does not follow the Regents exam schedule, which allowed it to send students to the March for Life, said Chris Hood, the school’s service-learning director.

Hood said the students flew to Washington Jan. 20 and attended a conference on life issues. Prior to the march, the students participated in a youth rally and a Mass. The contingent, which also included Hood, a parent and a college student intern, returned Jan. 21, he said.
