Mark Hare will sign copies of his book, Watching My Friend Die: The Honest Death of Bob Schwartz, at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester on Saturday, April 9, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Hare is a columnist for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, and his book-signing is part of a fundraising event for an endowment named for Schwartz, who was a beloved hockey coach and social studies teacher at McQuaid. Schwartz died in 1998 from pancreatic cancer. Hare’s book documents the death of his friend in the context of both men’s spiritual convictions as well as popular conceptions of a “good death.”
The Dady Brothers, Curran and Riales, and the Monroe County Bluegrass Ramblers will provide music for the event. Copies of CD recordings by Schwartz, who was an acoustic musician, will be available for purchase. Light refreshments will be served.
A donation of $20 may be sent in advance to “The Bob Schwartz Memorial Evening” c/o McQuaid Jesuit High School, 1800 S. Clinton Ave., Rochester, NY 14618. Make checks payable to McQuaid Jesuit High School. At the door, donations of $25 will be accepted. Attendees will receive a complimentary copy of Hare’s book.
