In the age of the iPod, text messages, Facebook and Twitter, rowing a boat might not seem the most likely way to bring 39 teenage girls together. But don’t tell that to the girls who row for the crew team at Our Lady of Mercy High School. Who has time for tweets and texts when you have to rise at 5 a.m., hit the water at 6 and make it to school by 7:30? And don’t forget the afternoon practices. All the hard work paid off this year, as Mercy’s crew team had three boats medal at the New York State Scholastic Rowing Championship Regatta, held May 8-9, and two boats medal at the South Niagara High School Invitational, held May 22-23. Seniors Emma Keller and Hannah Khalil, who share a senior double boat that qualified for nationals, spoke to the Catholic Courier and said Mercy’s model of sisterhood makes this squad special.
