Mercy Jubilarians celebrate 1,750 years

This year the Sisters of Mercy celebrate two groups as the order transitions from marking jubilees based on the date of entrance into the novitiate to the date of entering the community as postulants. The combined total of all these sisters’ years of service is an astounding 1,750! The Sisters of Mercy in the regional community of Rochester will honor 30 sisters who celebrate 80, 75, 70, 60, 50 and 25 years as Sisters of Mercy.
Many of the jubilarians have taught in elementary and high schools in the Diocese of Rochester. Others have ministered in various areas of health care and in pastoral and social-services ministry. Sisters and associates of the Rochester community will gather on May 12 for the jubilee celebration at the Mercy motherhouse on Blossom Road in Brighton. It is impressive to realize how many hundreds of lives these sisters have touched in their service to those who are poor, sick and uneducated. Even in years of “retirement” the sisters continue to reach out to others through their prayers in the spiritual-apostolate ministry. Each sister chooses an inspirational motto, which is inscribed in the silver ring she receives at the time of her profession of perpetual vows.
